Chapter One
House was sitting in his office. It was a beautiful day and if Gregory House had been the type who were fond of the outdoors, he would have been disappointed that the day would be wasted at work. As he passed a level 15 of his new Nintendo DS game, Cuddy walked in looking annoyed.
“Shouldn’t you be at the clinic, telling people what’s wrong with them? It is part of your job.”
House looked up at her. She had just made him lose a life. He looked back at his DS muttering, “I should, but then here we are”
Cuddy took the DS from his hands, turning it off and placed it on his desk. “Go” she said leaning in slightly then leaving House’s office behind her.
House limped to the clinic- “Dr House signs in, 9:30 am” he said to the nurse picking up a file and going into exam room three.
“Shouldn’t you be in the clinic? Well yes I should, but I don’t care about the ignorant fools who think a common cold is influenza. Na na na. I’ll show her.”
After five minutes the blond patient in front of him gave a small fake cough. “Is this going to help me? Your grumbling, I mean.”
“And you’re problem would be…?”
“A runny nose.” She answered promptly, looking glad that she was finally getting some attention.
House gave a small sigh and started to walk out when a nurse came through the doorway. “Leaving so soon Dr House?” she said in a falsely sweet voice, “You wouldn’t want to leave your patient without a diagnosis would you?”
“Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong. She said she had a runny nose and I told her she needs to buy a scarf.”
He limped out of the room leaving the nurse looking defeated.

After looking around a little while, House found his ducklings in the Pathology labs sitting at the bench, working.
“What are you doing?” he asked, stopping in front of the bench. He started playing with his walking stick.
“Tests” replied Forman , looking up at House briefly, then going back to work.
“I figured. You happen to be in a lab. What test?”
“Tests for a patient” Chase suggested sarcastically.
“What patient?” House asked looking annoyed. Their vagueness was starting to annoy him. He annoyed them, that was the way it usually worked. He didn’t enjoy the table turn. “I never told you to do any tests on a patient.”
Forman looked up again and muttered, “Maybe you’ve taken too many pills.”
House’s walking stick stopped in mid-twirl and he put it back down. He gave a bored look. This conversation had played too many times. “There is no such thing as too many pills and I still didn’t tell you to do any tests.”
“No” said a familiar voice from the door, “I did.” Cuddy walked in, letting the door close itself behind her.
House considered ignoring her, but let his curiosity get the better of him, “Why?”
“I run this hospital. These are my staff and they do as I tell them.” she said, “Unlike you” she added in undertone.
“No, they’re my staff, I tell them what to do.”
“Stop being so selfish, House. I didn’t cost this hospital $100 million.”
House gave a small scoff. “Oh let it go already, We all know that it was Chase’s fault.”
Chase, who, like the other two, had been listening on silently, quite ignoring his work, looked up suddenly. “My fault? What did I do?” Chase said with an indignant look on his face.
“What didn’t you do?” House asked looking at him for the first time since he entered.
“What he didn’t do was lose this hospital $100 million.” Said Cuddy as the door swung open again.
Wilson stood at the door with an open file in his hand. He surveyed the situation before muttering, “I thought I heard depressed maniacs grumbling.”
House ignored the interruption and continued, “What’s a $100 million to some person dying because they thought they’d get better taking heart attack pills and they got a heart attack anyway.” He felt annoyed. If Cuddy was going to go off every couple of seconds, he may as well have been sent packing.
“This isn’t about you!” Cuddy said getting louder.
Wilson started to walk to the door, saying quietly “I’ll come back later then.” He opened the door and looked back at the file. He let the door swing back closed. He lingered there a moment before turning back to the scene of tension. “This is interesting….” He said, still looking at the file.
House, who was keeping his eyes on Cuddy, said in a smaller voice than before, “But out.”
Wilson looked up. “There’s swelling in this patient’s chest.”
House gave an eye roll “Is this patient a girl?” he asked sarcastically.
Cuddy went around to look at the file. “No”
“Is he fat?” Chase asked. House gave a smile as Cameron chucked a test tube holder at him.
“Ow” said Chase softly, he looked at Cameron, surprised, “What you do that for?”
Wilson looked at Chase, “He’s not fat either.”
“How big is the swelling?”
“About half the size of my fist.” Wilson replied.
House limped to have a closer look at the file and pushed passed them muttering “Room 35”
Wilson and Cuddy left the room.
“I still think he must be fat.” Chase muttered to Foreman.
Cameron turned on him, “So fat people can’t have tumors”
“I wasn’t saying that.”
“Yeah, you were,” said Forman following Cameron out of the room, leaving Chase inside alone.
He rolled his eyes and followed suit, muttering “It was a possibility.”
