By the time I had made my coffee, drank it and eaten my cereal it was 6:30. I had a shower and dressed for work. Olivia was still asleep so I bashed on her door until she woke up. She opened the door of her room with a dead look on her face. ‘What do you want?’ she said still half asleep. ‘I want you to get dressed and go to school by 7:30.’ She stared to close the door on me so I took this as rejection. ‘I let you live here, eat my food, use my water, use my electricity, waste away my money. I do all that and I don’t ask anything of you. Just this once, do as a say. No questions asked.’ She looked taken aback by what I said and yet by the time I had finished feeding Sunny, she had dressed, made herself a quick breakfast and was going out the door. We went our separate ways, her to the bus stop and me to the car park. I felt happy that for once my sister had listened to me. I jumped into my car and started it up. I turned the music on just as I was starting to back out and was met with the sound of blaring rock music. This was a change from the normal music I would listen to. I pulled the CD out and read the name on it. My sister had been in my car. Better yet I think my sister had driven my car. She was going to be in so much trouble when I told Mum.

After I had successfully disposed of the CD and was back to listening to my normal music, I left the unit blocks. I was driving to the station when I noticed that someone was following me.

They followed my every route, from start to finish. I tried to see who it was but they were smart and made sure I didn’t see them. I sighed. I had a feeling who was tailgating me. I had to remind myself of the Mercedes he was driving yesterday, so it couldn’t possibly be him, then again, anything is possible…he could have several cars that I dint know about. Listen to me; I sound like his mother. Actually his mother was very sweet and she made the best triple chocolate fudge cake in the world. But triple chocolate fudge cake was not really relevant right now. I stopped at the lights and took some time to look at him through my rear view mirror. I sat there staring at him, seeing as the lights were taking their time. I looked closer. I couldn’t really tell out the face but it looked like he was…oh my gosh. He was waving at me. The lights finally turned green and it didn’t take me long to put foot to pedal and streak off toward the station. But the car behind me was in hot pursuit after me and wasn’t giving any giveaways that he was going to slow down. I think I actually let out a sigh of relief as I saw the police only parking lot up ahead. I drove as quickly as I could towards it without going over the speed limit. As I drove off the road I looked back. He slowed down as he went past me but quickly sped up so as not to attract too much attention. After I parked my car I practically ran to get inside. When I finally reached the safety of the indoors, Jamie was already waiting for me with a hot cup of coffee (his of course).

‘What were you running from?’ he smirked as I walked up to him. ‘I though I saw you I the parking lot. I guess I was wrong.’ ‘Harsh. That’s not a very nice thing to say to your fellow police officer.’ ‘Really? Tough.’ I walked past him and into my office. This building was enormous compared to other buildings in the area. Everyone had their own office and I mean everyone. I’m being serious; even the cleaner. I wasn’t in the best caring and sharing mood today and I wasn’t about to open up to him. I think he could see it on my face because he frowned and asked me what was wrong. I could have given him a big list of what was wrong but I couldn’t. Not sharing today, remember? I sat at my desk while Jamie rambled on about how you should talk about it to your friends and how it’s not good to bottle it up inside, yada yada. I looked down at Aaron’s folder. I was going to have to choose between going through his big ugly file with his big ugly pictures of his big ugly face or I was going to have to talk to Jamie. This was a life or death decision. On one hand I would be talking to Jamie for hours before I got any work done while on the other hand I would actually have to work on this case in which, after getting that phone call, I would rather cut my own head off. If you didn’t get why I chose to talk to Jamie well maybe you should just read the last two chapters again to refresh you memory and get my drift.

So I had to talk about everything that had happened (excluding the call from Aaron. Do you know how much trouble I could get in for that?) With my sister and her letting my cat out for it to die and her stealing my car and her wasting my money and her, ruining my life. Just as we were hitting the thirty minute point (to which I had talked so much that I thought my tongue could have fallen out) my desk phone rang. I wasn’t going to pick it up at first but then Jamie so kindly pointed out that it was ringing and that I should pick it up. ‘H-hello?’ I said nervously, expecting to hear Aaron’s voice. Hey if he found out my home number it wasn’t going to be that hard to find out my work one too. ‘Alicia, it’s Mummy.’ ‘Hello mother.’ I replied. Jamie was containing a laugh on the other side of the table. I knew what would come next. “Honey, how would you like to come over for dinner tonight? I’ll cook your favourite”. I held my hand over the phone and leant over the table. ‘Quick, invite me over.’ I pleaded to Jamie. ‘Let me get this straight,’ he took a second to gather his thoughts, ‘you want me to invite you over so that you can’t eat dinner with your family.’ I nodded ‘No.’ he replied sternly. I knew my fight was over there and then. He used that same voice on his daughter, Rachel, when she kept insisting that she needed a new Barbie doll. I put the phone back up to my ear.

‘Are you still there? Alicia?’ ‘Yes, I’m still here Mum.’ ‘Good. We’re having a family dinner tonight and I’d appreciate it if you came.’ ‘But we had a family dinner last week.’ ‘It’s different this time. Mitch will be over.’ my face dropped when I heard that. My twin brother who was loved by everyone and was going to make “something big” of himself one day. Yes, the boy who everyone wanted to befriend, every girl wanted to go out with him and make me and my sister resent him. ‘Mitch will be there?’ I looked at Jamie. He had a look of sympathy on his face. He knew how much we hated our brother. And I had to share most of my DNA with him. ‘Sorry, I already have plans.’ ‘Alicia, he’s your brother. He misses you. Oh look he’s awake. You can talk to him right now if you want.’ I was almost too quick to answer, ‘No! I mean no thanks. I have a lot of work to do so…’ ‘Please just come.’ I could hear my mum’s heart breaking on the other end. What could I say to her? ‘Alright, I’ll come.’ I think I was about to throw up. ‘Wonderful. Now dress formally and bring your sister. We’ll be having guests’ over.’ and that’s the point when I hung up. I don’t think I could have listened anymore. My brother was in town and I had just agreed to go to his party. _______________________________________

Chapter 4
I sat quietly next to my sister. I was wearing my best dress. It was the most expensive piece of clothing in my closet. It fell down to just before my knees and was a v-neck cutting off at about halfway down my chest. When I appeared at the door my mum freaked. She said it was not the proper attire that she expected to see in front of guests and told me to go upstairs and put a jumper on. My mum basically blew a fuse whenever she saw someone wearing a top that wasn’t a skivvy. I had to remind her that she did tell us to dress up and this was my most elegant dress. She stopped arguing with me after that. My dad was more carefree than my mum and he said that he truly like my dress. My mother, in turn, gave him a hard whack in the chest. And if she had a fit when she saw me, then she must have had a heart attack when she saw my brother’s new girlfriend. My brother was more of a Casanova then some sort of working dad. He arrived with his girlfriend shortly after me, followed by her family. Her name was Mina Silken and she was, of course, a model. She was attractive and was undoubtedly anorexic. I couldn’t help asking her parents if they named her after Mina from “Dracula” or not. Mitch came up to us, laughing, and slapped me on the back, reassuring Mina’s parents that I was just joking as usual. I responded by telling her parents that I only joked with friends (and he was not a friend) and that if he did not remove his hand from my back then I would break it off his arm.

Mina’s parents avoided standing too close to me for the rest of the night. I was guessing it was because they thought I was going to karate chop their head off or something. We all sat eating my mum’s quite appetising roast and making normal conversation. Until, that is, Mitch pointed out hat he had seen Harley the other day. ‘Really, I did too. Is he still looking for his fiancée?’ ‘No, he found her. They’ve made up now. When did you see him?’ ‘Just when I told him to identify Margo’s, that’s his fiancée’s sister, brutally murdered body. If you didn’t know, I’m a cop. I think there’s something fetid about this case though.’ I said plainly, as if it happened everyday. Everyone was just staring at me. I could see Mina’s parents stating to go pale. But then Mina herself broke the awkward silence. ‘Isn’t it only men that can be in the police?’ she asked quizzically. I was dumbfounded. How dumb could this girl be? What was she? A hominid? ‘May I ask you a question Mina? How high is your IQ?’ Mitch, who was drinking water at the time, coughed it back into the cup. ‘Alicia, don’t.’ he coughed but I ignored him. ‘Because it’s got to be like, what, four?’ ‘Alicia!’ my mum joined the chorus.

who me....it happens in all stories
‘Well for a rag like her it’s got to be.’ I shouted. ‘Alicia! Get out!’ my mum shouted twice as loud. I gladly shoved my chair back towards the table as I was making my way to the back door. I heard my mum apologise to Mina for my rudeness and Mina reply by saying it was fine and that I was just jealous of her. Fat chance. As I sat on the back step, I heard the glass door slide open. Mitch appeared and sat next to me. I thought he would start shouting at me and I would have to make up a whole story but instead he apologised. Mr Big Shot apologised to me. That was two in a row; I am the Apology Queen! But my happiness was short lived when he told me to apologise to Mina and her family. So I did; I also told Olivia that I didn’t want her coming over tomorrow. Surprisingly she didn’t try to object. She probably thought I was a Saint by now. I could imagine her making a religion after me. After saying goodbye I ran out to my car. I didn’t want to stay inside for any longer than I had to.
