I rolled my eyes and reached out and grabbed Jamie’s coffee. He gave me the evil eye when I politely finished it off for him. It was an extra large size. There was no way he could have finished it by himself.
It was when I was halfway through scoffing it down that my phone rang. I want going to answer it but seeing as Jamie told me to finish his coffee so I could answer it; I thought that it wouldn’t hurt. You know answering it after I drank all his coffee.
But I wish that I didn’t.
When I flipped open the phone and saw that it was my house. I excused myself from our conversation and went outside where I was out of hearing shot from everybody.
‘Aaron, how did you get my number?’ I shouted at him.
‘It was sticky taped to the fridge and seeing as it wasn’t in your handwriting…’ I heard him say. I knew where this was going. As my mother would say, “Why don’t you go out and find somebody. It’s bad enough that you’re a cop. Maybe that’s the reason you’re not married yet.”
So she would basically be saying that it was my social life or my religion.
Hmm, I think I’ll go with my social life.
Or did she want me to be like Mitch- who being twenty-seven and unfortunately my twin and brother by birth only- who has remarried at least six times and every time, had a bigger and better wedding.
Well if she wants me to be like him, she can shove it in a very special place.
‘Hello? Are you still there. Because you know Ally you gotta background check on these people. You don’t know what they do or where they come from-’
‘Aaron, I don’t-’
‘They could come from Hungary for all you know. One day they could just be all like “Well honey, I have to leave you to go to Hungary. See ya.” you know that don’t you Ally?’
‘Aaron. Seriously, I don’t-’
‘What? You don’t get it? Come on. He could be a backstabber, a cheater, a…a-’
‘Or a suspected criminal.’ there was a long pause, as if he was thinking about a comeback.
‘Well whatever he is, I don’t like him. And I’m only doing this to help you. As a friend. Okay? Okay. But if you ever-’
‘Aaron, shut up. I don’t have a boyfriend. I live with my sister. That’s her handwriting.’
Oh.
That’s probably what he was thinking. Oh. Check and mate. Ally two; Aaron zero. Well know I know how to make Aaron jealous now. I really need to find myself a boyfriend.
No I don’t. erase that from my mind.
I like living alone; well half alone anyway. On some days my sister comes to stay with me. Okay on most days she comes to stay with me. And she’ll probably be there when I get home tonight because Mitch will be at our parents.
Oh, d**n.
‘Yeah and about my sister. She’ll probably be there at about three-thirty this afternoon.’
He said that that was cool, to have my sister coming and all. I told him that he can say it was cool when my sister found out I was hiding a criminal in my apartment. And then I heard a crunch. I didn’t step on anything-I even looked down and checked-and when I listened more closely, I heard Aaron munching on something. Aaron was eating my food.
‘Aaron,’ I said slowly. He answered with a “Yeah”, ‘What are you eating.’
‘Oh, your sister looks just like you.’ he said amazed. Well, duh. But the only photo I had in a frame in my apartment was in my bedroom. On my bedside table to be exact.
So he was eating my food in my room. Great.
‘Get out of my room Aaron.’ I said. I was starting to get sick of him. I should just haul his ass into gaol.
